How Simply Sky uses your device’s sensors and shares sky maps, and how to get help.

On-device astronomy

Simply Sky calculates sky positions on your iPhone using its bundled astronomy code and catalogs. It does not require an account or download sky data during use. The app has no advertising, cross-app tracking, third-party analytics or developer-run data collection service.

Location and motion

With your permission, Simply Sky uses your location while the app is open to calculate the sky for your position. Motion and compass readings align the map with the direction you point your iPhone. These readings are processed on your device and are not sent to the developer.

You can change location and motion permissions in the iPhone’s Settings app. Disabling access can make live sky positions or direction alignment unavailable.

Optional camera view

When you turn on Camera, the app asks to show a live rear-camera preview behind the sky labels. It does not record, save or transmit camera images. You can turn Camera off in the app or revoke its permission in Settings.

Preferences and diagnostics

Favorites and display preferences are stored locally on your device. Removing the app removes its local app data; copies retained in device backups are handled by Apple’s backup settings and services.

The app can write technical timing and sensor-readiness information to the device’s system log to help investigate problems. It does not automatically upload these logs to the developer.

Sharing a sky map

You can create a sky card and choose a destination through the system share sheet. The card is a rendered sky map, not a camera photo. It shows the observation’s date, time and time zone, sky direction and elevation. Catalog attribution accompanies the exported image as metadata and share text. Precise geographic coordinates and camera images are not included in the exported card or its image metadata.

You decide where to send or save the card. A shared copy is then handled by its destination and recipient under their own policies; Simply Sky cannot recall it.
